Mini Project: Making Contact

Mini Project time!
Enter our 12 year old night stand tables. They've moved to three new houses, even trekking across the country. And because of this, they are in pretty sad shape now.

And since they are in sad shape, it is perfect item to try something fun and cost-effective.

Sneak Peek: Mid Century Credenza

Remember when I posted about those free chairs?
I spy with my little eye, something that is awesome... right there... behind them!

Those cabinets/credenzas were rescued by my boss a year or so ago, and have been languishing by the back door since then. They are just too great to throw away, but alas, no one had time to spend on them... until me.

Living Room: Rock 'n' Roll

I am still working on the window wall and valance, but in the meantime, I painted another wall.

Work Perk: Flux Lighting

Every year, Flux Lighting drops by the office with egg rolls. The best egg rolls.

It is a real treat, especially since this time of year brings on so many sweets.

This year was a little different, however.
Flux wanted us to come and see their new showroom, so they were going to send a bus to pick us up.

Mission Chair: Reversible Reveal

The sneak peak for this project was 3 weeks ago. I finally put the finishing touches on this Mission style chair. To check out its sad story, check out the blog post, Chairpalooza.

Before it was in pretty rough shape, but the bones of it were still in great condition.

After, it turned out pretty fantastic. Grey-dog agrees.
So, how did I get from the sad chair to this gem?

Christmas Decor: The Tree

Like most people, December is a month for putting up decorations for us. This is our second year with our new artificial tree, and our second time attempting to decorate it. 

I started at the bottom by giving the ugly stand an inexpensive new look.
All I used is some burlap to wrap the stand, then used plastic bags to puff it out, and wrapped it with a simple bow.

Junking: Unnecessary Items

I may have created a monster.
My hubby calls me at work to tell me that he found a new thrift store. Great!
Then he says that he found a chair and he was going to send me a photo right now.
What? Umm, okay? Wait, why isn't he at work? Oh, here is the photo... hmmm, not too bad.
So I tell him, if he likes it to pick it up.

That was last week.
Today, we had different plans, but somehow ended up going junking.
First stop, our favorite little honey-hole.

Renovation: Victorian in Powell River

A few years ago, I was visiting my parents in Powell River. Their friend, Victoria, lived across the street, and was renovating a home exactly like their house. The area is called, 'the Old Townsite', and the style of home is found throughout the area. According to the Powell River Historical Site, this architecture was defined as 'the street facing gable'.

There is a fairly good chance that the second house in this photograph is my parents home, about 100 years ago. My Mom can confirm...

This house, however, is absolutely the one across the street.
Victoria and Steve had passed by this house many times, always feeling that one day they would buy it and renovate. One day, it went up for sale, and so they seized the opportunity. Of course, this is not the condition that the house was in the day they bought it...

I Love Lamp: Shade Solution

As per my last post, meltingplastic bought a lamp with a really bad shade on it.

She hated it, (and who wouldn't!) so I offered to take it off her hands and experiment with re-covering it.

Retro TV Tray Rendition

We, like many other families in the Western world, don't eat at the dinner table. There I said it.
Our dirty little secret is that we sometimes eat dinner in front of the TV.
Does this make us bad people?
Yes, but in an effort to make it easier to be bad people, I found some TV trays!!
Now we can eat in front of the TV in STYLE!

Chair Reveal: Mid-century modern

I originally spoke of this chair back in the post: Chair-palooza.

Cabinet Craze

I really need a place to put all of my sewing supplies, especially if I am going to continue to re-upholster furniture.

Enter this mid-century modern credenza that I found at a second-hand furniture store for $10.

It was functionally, fantastic.
Aesthetically, however, it needed some serious work.
The top had some bad staining, as did the inside.

 As such, the cabinet and doors needed to be sanded.

Chair-palooza!!

I am officially a dumpster diver!
Okay, so no dumpster was actually involved, but I did find these in front of a neighbour's house.
They were going to throw them out after saving them from an old hotel that was closing.
Unfortunately, the guy saved them, only to have them be left outside for a year.

I am excited to see what I can do with them.

This one is from around the 1930s.
It would have had a seat cushion and a back cushion, originally.

The wood is in great shape despite weathering the storm.

There are still original springs, also in fantastic condition, that will not only keep the new cushion in place but also make the chair comfortable.

Mid-century modern side chair.

Should be a fairly simple restoration.

The wood is a bit more weathered than the previous piece, but perhaps with a little sanding, I will be able to re-stain it back to its former glory

Another 1930s piece.

The seat cushion is missing. I mean, the cushion was there, but it was so water-logged and heavy, that we didn't want to put it in the car.
Plus, it had a bit of weeds growing out of it...

The wood (again) is a bit worse for wear, but we will see what can be done about that. If it comes down to it, it can be painted and turned into a real bold, dynamic piece.

The pièce de résistance is this last one.

It is mid-century modern.
Probably in the best shape out of the four.
The wood can easily be restored, the upholstery project will be the most difficult than the others, but will probably be the most rewarding.

I am so excited about these finds. I cannot wait to see what I can do with them.

I also have a chair that we found in the attic. It has already been assembled and painted, but until I find foam for the cushion, it as yet to be blogged about.
